sunkist sticker

(my brain is fried, can't write any intersting things...)

Last night I just ate a very sweet Sunkist orange. Now, if you are wondering what is that number printed on the Sunkist sticker, that's the PLU or Price Look-Up code, an agriculture practise in North America, something like the barcode that the cashier scans.

Now, there is extra information behind the number... (behind the number is the skin, and no, not Da Vinci code, stop dreaming!)

3027 - ORANGE: Shamouti
3028 - ORANGE: Delta Seedless, small
3036 - ORANGE: Midknight, small
3107 - ORANGE: Navel, medium
3108 - ORANGE: Valencia, medium
3109 - ORANGE: Seville / Marmalade type
3110 - ORANGE: Navel, Cara / Red
3153 - ORANGE: Delta, seedless, medium
3154 - ORANGE: Delta, seedless, large
3155 - ORANGE: Midknight, medium
3156 - ORANGE: Midknight, large
3309 - ORANGE: Lima
3310 - ORANGE: Pera
3370 - ORANGE: Maltaise
3371 - ORANGE: Salustiana
3372 - ORANGE: Navelate and other late Navel varieties
3373 - ORANGE: Navelina including Newhall
3374 - ORANGE: Without postharvest treatment
4012 - ORANGE: Navel, large
4013 - ORANGE: Navel, small
4014 - ORANGE: Valencia, small
4381 - ORANGE: Blood
4382 - ORANGE: Juice
4383 - ORANGE: Tangelo Minneola
4384 - ORANGE: Navel, small1
4385 - ORANGE: Navel, large1
4386 - ORANGE: Temple, small
4387 - ORANGE: Temple, large

If the PLU code is 5 digit, and the first digit is 9, then it is organic. If the first digit is 8, then it is genetically modified

(Disclaimer: this post does not guarantee you sweet oranges!)

  • I totally just used this! My orange looked extremely normal, but when I peeled it, I wasn't sure if it was a blood orange or just really rotten! Turns out it's a Moro Sunkist 4381.

    word!

  • I just had a sunkist orange. It looked really bright orange and good on the outside. But tasted really sour and horrible.

I had a different orange today, not as bright orange as the sunkist orange, but it was much sweeter and better tasting than the sunkist ornages.
