whose dragon boat festival

Tuesday was Dragon Boat Festival or Duan Wu. To my non-Chinese readers, Duan Wu is a festival to commemorate the Chinese poet Qu Yuan, who committed suicide when his country fell. (alright, in those days, suicide was glorious)

Now, the problem is, South Korea has succesfully claiming Duan Wu as its National Cultural Heritage from UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization), ie, something like copyright. People's reaction was like, what the... and if you do a search online, you would see words like "hijacked", "steal" , etc from Chinese websites.

Some people think that the freaks at United Nations are dumb, and maybe they are, but the fact is that Koreans take the festival more seriously than Chinese! They have large scale rites and rituals and many other cultural activities. Ask a Chinese kid and he/she may just say "ah, dumpling very nice!"

Why blame others for taking it away when you yourself don't safeguard your own heritage.

  • that is one thing I don't agree with.

Globalising doesn't mean diluting, it is like learning a new language doesn't mean you MUST forget your own mother tongue.

Globalisation is such an easy and convenient scapegoat.

  • very true.. but think about how many people are willing to accept new ideas and retain old ideas?? very little.. as long as people have something new.. they accept it most of the time with welcomed arms.. and then slowly forget about their own traditions..
