i realized something... I misread what you wrote. I thought it read "you tell us how to answer the question but you never tell us how to answer the question." * raises eyebrow*
most students actually don't answer the question at all. if the question asks for the reasons for singapore's defeat then list the reasons for that and not list something else like what happened after singapore's defeat.
how to answer the question is cannot be taught, the student is supposed to know it. actually, anyone can answer the question. like i ask you, how are you today? can you ask anyone to teach you how to answer that question? no, the answer just comes to you, you are fine/not so fine today.
in history, there will never be a right wrong answer, only an answer which doesn't answer the question. so that above quote is not valid in history.
(after pausing a few min to think) i'm sure farrell did allocate at least an hour of lecture to essay writing before you guys did the term paper. he always does that. i guess that can answer the question on how to answer the question. *tsk tsk*
anyway, it doesn't matter how you answer the question as long as you answered the question. good luck for your final exams. it'd be a breeze~
anyhow whack... maybe you are right, I took it too seriously, too much effort, that's why couldn't score well, must learn from you and don't put in effort then will score well.
the crux, as he said is to answer the question, and leave out things that are not related to the question. i think my notes on essay writing is in my crashed comp, so can't help you with that.
don't know if farrell ever mentioned it to you guys before, but refrain from using "i" or "we" in your essay. and also don't use supposes such as "think", "maybe", "perhaps". also can structure your esay in a way to make it sound more academic. narration is always not very advisable.
when you argue, most people tend to say things like "i think that this is not the case", instead just say that "this is not the case as blah blah blah..."
don't really know what you exact problem is so can't really help. but if you really don't know how to write essays, just go see farrell and tell him that you don't know how to write essays. he's not that intimidating in real life.

hi xxoos
somehow Prof Farrell didn't talk to us about essay writing. So the word "always" is not valid in this course. =P
the words "come see me" also aren't useful, since he repeats what he has written in the analysis...
Sigh... how to argue! I ended up narrating events, when the events are supposed to be my tools of argument...
anyway thanks xxoos, advices are always good!

keep your answer to the point.

thanks xxoos. Will try to keep those in mind~

agree very much with xxoos.. the main thing is to relate back to the question and ask yourself.. "Am I answering the question??"
from there.. you should be able to take it away..
